More Summer internships please!
This year we received over 130 applications from STEM students at the four CSU campuses where we offer the STEM Advantage program - Cal State LA, Cal State Dominguez Hills, Cal State Northridge (CSUN) and Cal State Long Beach.

To support as many students as possible - our goal is 100 STEM Advantage Scholars this year - we need more paid summer internships to provide students real world experience in their field of study. Dawn and Lee Ann have been meeting the students in "Get to Know You" sessions. They are talented, show passion, and are excited about a summer internship.  Majors include:
Computer Science
Computer Technology/ Homeland Security
Computer Information Systems
Computer Engineering
Software Engineering
Mathematics
Mechanical Engineering
Electrical Engineering
Aerospace Engineering
Civil Engineering
Biomedical Engineering
BioTechnology

To learn more and provide a paid summer internship(s), please contact Dawn or Lee Ann

Southland Technology Conference ("SoTec")
(L to R) Lee Ann, Abanoub, Zacarie, Steven, Ashley, Karina, Shawna, and Carole
STEM Advantage was thrilled to be represented and honored at the Southland Technology Conference ("SoTec") on October 13 and 14 in Long Beach.

Lee Ann Kline accepted the SoTec Inspiration Award, which recognizes inspirational community service by a Southland technology professional, on behalf of all the professionals who support STEM Advantage Scholars as mentors, internship partners, donors and Board members. Shawna Gale, who's been a mentor every year and is Ashley's mentor this year, celebrated with us, along with Board member Carole Schlocker.

Thank you to the SoTec Committee for inviting STEM Advantage Scholars to be room monitors and attend the conference sessions. We'd also like to thank Scholars Amy, Cynthia, Sevag, Ricardo, Elthon, Abanoub, Alexander, Zacarie, Ashley, Steven and Karina for being stellar ambassadors for our program!

Networking 101 workshop
As part of STEM Advantage's Personal and Career Development Workshop series, Program Director Dawn Digrius presented Networking 101: how to network at a Professional Conference at the Society of Women Engineers (SWE) meeting at Cal State LA on October 24. During the presentation, Dawn spoke about why networking is important. Then students broke into groups of three and practiced networking skills. Each group rotated as a student, a professional, and an observer to practice networking skills.

Over 30 students attended, including members of SWE and the American Society for Structural Engineers.  The event was so well received that many students commented on it during our "Get to know you sessions" on October 27. Plus, other organizations have invited Dawn to present a Networking 101 workshop to their members.

If you are looking to hire entry-level STEM talent, please send a note to Lee Ann for a copy of the  STEM Advantage Talent Guide featuring recent graduates.
