Focus on increasing graduation rates
The California State University (CSU) and media have published a series of articles recently on the need and benefits of increasing graduation rates. To meet the workforce demands of California's innovation economy in the years and decades to come, the CSU's Graduation Initiative 2025 has established ambitious objectives to increase the six-year graduation rate for first-time freshmen and four-year graduation rate for both first-time freshmen and transfer students.

STEM Advantage has the potential to significantly increase both retention of STEM students and their graduation rates. Students tell us the STEM Advantage Scholars program is "life changing" as they gain confidence and skills, and begin to build a network through a paid internship, mentor, and $5,000 scholarship. Plus, STEM Advantage is using MentorNet, a scalable mentoring platform, to offer a mentor who is a STEM professional to all STEM majors from freshmen year through graduation at the CSU campuses where we offer our program. Thank you to everyone who supports STEM Advantage. YOU are making a difference for women and underserved students!
Internship combines skills and passion
Lonnie with Ann Augustyn, Acting Deputy Director, Office of Civil Rights
Lonnie completed an internship in Washington, DC, this summer. Through the Department of Energy's Minority Educational Institution Student Partnership Program, Lonnie worked in an IT role in the Office of Civil Rights.

Lonnie volunteers by speaking to high school students about the importance of education and the many opportunities in math and science fields. He values education and loves sharing his passion of science and technology with future leaders. He plans to "pay it forward," one of the pillars of the STEM Advantage Scholars program, by encompassing the need for cyber awareness and being an advocate for the need to delete cyber-bullying.

Lonnie earned an Associate of Science degree in Computer Science at Los Angeles Southwest College. Then he transferred to Cal State Dominguez Hills, where he is earning a BS in Computer Technology with a focus on Homeland Security.  He expects to graduate in December 2017.

CIOs help Delphix make a difference for STEM Advantage
Delphix hosted a breakout session at the recent CIO100 Symposium in Rancho Palos Verdes. They pledged to donate $20 per attendee to STEM Advantage. With 75 attendees, Delphix's breakout session was a standing-room-only event!

STEM Advantage Scholars were the big winners as Delphix made a $1,500 donation to STEM Advantage! Thank you to Dave Best, Moe Nwankwo and the Delphix team for encouraging more individuals from underrepresented groups to pursue a STEM career and giving back to the community. Read more

Welcome CSUN!

STEM Advantage is honored to announce that California State University, Northridge (CSUN), is the third CSU campus to offer the STEM Advantage program to students.  We are pleased to partner with Dr. Ramesh, Dean of the College of Engineering and Computer Science, the faculty and staff. Welcome CSUN!

Cal State Dominguez Hills, Cal State LA, CSUN ... we are on our way towards our strategic goal "23 by 2023" to offer the STEM Advantage program at all 23 CSU campuses by 2023!

Over the past few weeks we held information sessions for computer science, math and engineering students at all three campuses. With your support we anticipate selecting a record number of STEM Advantage Scholars this year.

THANK YOU to all of the companies that provide paid internships to STEM Advantage Scholars!
